Introduction to Astronomy

This course will present an overview of historical approaches to the understanding of the
science of astronomy; study electromagnetic radiation and how astronomers use this
phenomena; present an overview of the solar system and its components; study the sun as a
star and other stars which are double, variable, or bizarre; describe the evolution of
stars; study groupings of stars in clusters and galaxies; review the dynamics of galaxies
and clusters of galaxies; and analyze the role of galaxies in the dynamics of the
universe.

Observational Astronomy
1 unit - 9 hours lecture/27 hours lab total
CR/NC only
Prerequisite: ASTRO 10 or concurrent enrollment
Corequisite: none
Recommended preparation: none
This course is designed to familiarize students with visual, telescopic and some
photographic observing techniques. Both the day and evening sky may be observed. Optional
late-night observing sessions may be offered. Telescopes may be checked out by students.
The planetarium will be used on cloudy nights.
