Earth Sciences
College of the Redwoods

College of the Redwoods offers a broad program in earth sciences, including courses in geology, geography, climate change, meteorology, oceanography, and seismology. We emphasize an applied approach where students learn from local examples. Furthermore, the earth science faculty is dedicated to field-based learning. Many courses involve field trips where students apply concepts learned in the classroom.

Specialized field courses in both geology and geography are also offered. These have included field studies of the San Andreas Fault, Humboldt County geography, local rock formations, and regional volcanic features.

Our courses emphasize computer-aided presentations and student activities. Two rooms of student-dedicated computers are available within the physical science building. Other equipment such as mapping tools, seismographs, and rock preparation equipment are also available for student projects.

Close ties exist between the earth science program at College of the Redwoods and Humboldt State University (15 miles north). Two of our faculty are instructors at Humboldt State, one is a research associate, and another is an adjunct faculty member. This allows us to provide current scientific information, and provide students with smooth transitions to the university level.
