Homework Assignments

Fall 2006

Please note that the assignments I gave during the fall semester of 2005 still reside on this page. This is for my convenience, to remind me of what worked last semester and what didn't work, to give me a sense of pace, etc. However, your assignments during the fall semester of 2006 will differ, so please do not do one of the fall semester 2005 assignments by mistake.

Directions: Please follow these directions on all homework assignments.

1. On your homework assignment, place your name and assignment number in the top right corner of the page.
2. If an assignment takes more than a page, please staple the pages together.
3. Assignments will be handed in during classtime in separate piles: the assignment #1 pile, the assignment #2 pile, etc., so please do not staple two or more assignments together.
4. Simple one or two word answers or choices without explanatory prose are not acceptable. In all cases, use sound writing to justify your response.

• Assignment #1
• Log onto Web Advisor and make sure that your personal information (email, etc.) is up-to-date. Log onto Blackboard and make sure your personal information (email, etc.) is up-to-date. Respond to the Welcome Message in the Math 120 Discussion Board in Blackboard.
• Assignment #2
• Start building your personal Math 120 Reference Book! Get a bound notebook with grid (graph) paper in it. Make a title page with your name and contact information, set up a table of contents, and begin some entries (number the pages, with page #1 being the first page with information on it, after leaving a few pages blank for the table of contents to grow into).
  • Bring your Reference Book to the second class meeting on Thursday and show me your title page, toc, and beginning page.
  • Throughout the semester, you should enter important information in your Reference Book, such as definitions, procedures, key examples, explanations that make sense to you, diagrams -- ANYTHING that you anticipate will be USEFUL to you as we proceed in this course ... and beyond! This is FOR YOU. In particular, your Reference Book should serve as a very useful study guide for quizzes and exams. (Note, however, that your Reference Book is not a substitute for class notes. In general, your Reference Book should be much more concise and organized than your class notes, which normally contain everything that we do in class.)
  • Each time we have an examination, I will collect your Reference Book and assign it a grade. In addition, although the final examination is closed book and closed notes, you will be allowed to use your Reference Book on the final exam.

  • In Interactive Statistics, read Sections 1.1, 1.2, and 1.3, pages 1-15.
  • In Interactive Statistics, page 67-68, do exercises #1, 4, 6, 7, 8, 9, 11, and 12.
• Assignment #4
  • Find an article in a newspaper, magazine, journal, or on the internet, in which some statistical study is done. Make a copy of the article, then on college ruled paper, state the null and alternative hypothesis for the study and staple this to the copy of the article.

  • # In Interactive Statistics, read Section 1.4, pages 16-52.
  • In Interactive Statistics, page 69, exercise #15, first copy the frequency diagrams for Bag E and Bag F onto your homework paper. For part (a), clearly state Decision Rule I. In computing alpha and beta, write up your solution mimicing the style of Bag A versus Bag B at the top of page 20. Mark your frequency diagrams with alpha and beta as shown at the top of page 20. Before starting part (b), make fresh copies of the frequency diagrams for Bag E and Bag F on your homework paper. Then state the Decision rule, compute alpha and beta, and mark your frequency diagrams as directed in part (a) above.
  • In Interactive Statistics, page 69, exercise #16, first copy the frequency diagrams for Bags E, G, and H onto your homework paper. For part (a), calculate alpha using writing similar to that demonstrated in calculating alpha at the top of page 20. In calculating the requested p-value in part (b), mark your frequency diagram for bag E in a manner similar to the frequency diagram in the middle of page 31 with rejection region, acceptance region, and shading the region for the p-value (but yours will be two-sided). For part (c), mark the frequency diagrams for Bags G and H in a manner similar to the frequency diagram for Bag B on the top of page 20 (except yours will be two-sided).
  • In Interactive Statistics, pages 72-74, do exercises #25, 30, and 32. The writeup of your solutions should mimic the spirit of the instructions given for exercises #15 and #16 above, complete with frequency diagrams marked with rejection and acceptance regions, writing used to calculate alpha and beta, shading of p-values on the diagram, etc. You will receive no credit for cursory solutions. Put some effort into the writeup of your solution.

  • Use Fathom to complete each of the exercises at the end of the activity for homework. Obtain a printout of your work for each example.
  • Currently, Fathom is installed in PS110 and the ASC. Whenever you would like to be let in to PS110 to work on this assignment, please come see me in my office (or the division secretary in her office --- her name is Eloise) and I'll let you in to PS110 to work. Fathom is installed on all of the Academic Support Center computers, so you can also do your work in the ASC.
• Assignment #13
  • In Interactive Statistics, read Section 4.4.6, pages 270-276.
  • Take the "right hand" and "left hand" data collected in class LDI 4.23, rightleft.csv (pages 274-276) and enter the data into Fathom. Create a scatterplot of the data with right hand on the vertical axis and left hand on the horizontal axis.
    1. Add a 45^o line by right-clicking the graph, selecting Plot Function, and add the graph of Right = Left as shown in the following image.
    2. Answer the questions posed in LDI 4.23 on pages 275-276.
  • Provide examples requested by Exercises #4.48 and 4.49 on page 277.
  • On page 277, Exercise #4.52, create the requested scatterplot on a sheet of graph paper.
  • On page 278, Exercise #4.53, create the scatterplot in Fathom. Use Fathom textboxes to answer the questions posed in parts (b) and (c) of the text.
• Assignment #14
• Forbes magazine published data on the best small firms in 1993. These were firms with annual sales of more than five and less than $350 million. Firms were ranked by five-year average return on investment. The data extracted are the age and annual salary of the chief executive officer for the first 60 ranked firms. In question are the distribution patterns for the ages and the salaries.
• Use the CEO salary data at http://lib.stat.cmu.edu/DASL/Datafiles/ceodat.html. Set up bins of width 100, starting at 0. That is, the first bin is (0,100], the second (100,200], and so on. Using these bins, create a frequency table similar to that at the bottom of page 253 of your text (Interactive Statistics, 3rd ed.). Use the results in your frequency table to construct (by hand) a histogram of the CEO salary data on a sheet of graph paper. Label and scale each axis (similar to the historgrams shown in page 254 of Interactive Statistics).
• Use your mouse to highlight all of the CEO data, both AGE and SALARY (including headers), at http://lib.stat.cmu.edu/DASL/Datafiles/ceodat.html. Copy the highlighted data to the clipboard, then open a new Fathom window and drag a new collection icon to the window. Right click the Collection icon and select "Paste Cases." With the collection icon highlighted, drag a Case Table to the Fathom window and inspect the data to insure that it matches that at http://lib.stat.cmu.edu/DASL/Datafiles/ceodat.html. Drag a graph icon to the Fathom window, then drag the SALARY attribute from the Case Table onto the horizontal axis. You may need to hold down the Ctrl key (windows) or the Option key (Mac) to force the Salary data to be interpreted as numerics. Select Histogram from the drop down list at the upper right corner of the graph window. Obtain a printout of the result.
• Compare the Fathom generated histogram with your hand drawn histogram on your graph paper.
• Assignment #15
  • In Interactive Statistics, read Sections 5.1 and 5.2, pages 299-311.
  • On pages 311-312, do Exercises #3, 4, and 7.
  • On page 311, answer the questions for Exercise #6 in the following manner:
    1. Open Fathom.
    2. From the File menu, choose File Import ... , then import from URL .... A dialog box name "Enter Internet Location" will open. In this dialog, enter the url

       http://roadsidephotos.com/baseball/1985.htm

       . This will load the collection of Baseball Salaries for the year 1985.
    3. Highlight the collection box, then drag a Case Table to the Fathom window. Expand the Case Table and Explore the data.
    4. Drag the attribute SALARY to the horizontal axis of a new graph object. You may have to hold down the Ctrl key (windows) or the Option key (Mac) to force the SALARY data to be interpreted as quantitative data. Select "histogram" from the drop down menu of graph choices.
    5. Right click the graph and select "Plot Value" from the popup menu. Enter mean() and close. Do a simliar thing to plot the median, entering the function median().
    6. Use a text box object to answer parts (a) and (b) on page 311.
  • On page 312, do Exercise #5.8, performing each of the following steps.
    1. Create (on graph paper) a frequency plot for each shelf. Align these one atop the other on your graph paper. Using hand calculations and a calculator, find the mean and median SUGAR content for each shelf and mark the result on the appropriate frequency plot.
    2. Download the data set exer5_8.dat.
    3. Drag the data set to an open Fathom window and a collection will be formed. Highlight the collection and drag a CaseTable to the Fathom Window. You can inspect the data in this CaseTable to see if it matches the data in Exercise 5.8 in the text (it does).
    4. Create a new graph and drag SUGAR to the horizontal axis. Drag SHELF to the vertical axis, but hold the Shift key down while dropping this attribute to force this system to interpret the attribute as categorical instead of quantitative. Select Histogram for your plot type. This should create three histograms, one for each shelf.
    5. Right-click the graph and select Plot Value. Enter mean(SUGAR,SHELF=1), as shown in the following image.
    6. Continue as in part (5) and enter mean and median lines for each separate graph.
    7. Use a Summary Table to find mean and median SUGAR content by SHELF. Again, hold the Shift key down while dragging the SHELF attribute to force it to be interprested as categorical data. Compare to your hand calculations.
• Assignment #16
  • Download the data set NewHavenTemp.dat, which gives the average yearly New Haven temperature for the years 1912 through 1971.
    1. By hand, create a stem and leaf plot (ordered) of the average yearly temperatures.
    2. Use your stem and leaf plot to compute a five number summary for the dataset by hand.
    3. Follow the directions on pages 318-319 of your text to create a modified box plot on a sheet of graph paper. Clear indicate the scale on a horizontal axis, then place each number from your five number summary at the appropriate spot on your boxplot. Label any outliers with their values.
  • Use Fathom to create a boxplot of the New Haven average yearly temperatures.
  • Add a summary box and drag the temperature variable to the summary box. With the summary box highlighted, select Add Five-Number Summary from the Summary menu. Compare these results with your hand computed five-number summary.
  • Obtain a printout and compare it with your hand-drawn boxplot.
• Assignment #17
  • In Interactive Statistics, read Section 5.3, Measuring Variation or Spread, pages 312-333.
  • In Interactive Statistics, page 333, do exercises #10, 11, 12, and 13.
  • In Interactive Statistics, page 334, answer each part of exercise #15. Please do not simply answer true or false and feel that is adequate. In the case that you answer true, explain why. In the case that you answer false, give an explicit example (data set) that shows the falsehood of the statement.
  • In Interactive Statistics, pages 334-336, do exercies #16, 18, and 20.
• Assignment #18
  • Download the data set draftlottery1970.ftm.
  • Open the file in Fathom and perform the following tasks.
    1. Create a scatterplot of Draft_No versus Day_of_year. Does the draft seem random and fair based on your scatterplot?
    2. Create a side-by-side boxplot of the Draft_No versus the Month. To do this, drag the Draft_no onto the vertical axis, then the Month onto the horizontal axis. Select Boxplot from the drop down list. Drag categories with your mouse to put the months in their natural order.
    3. Let's look at another idea that places the months in a natural order. Create another graph in your Fathom window. Drag the Draft_no to the vertical axis, then drag the MoNumber to the horizontal axis. Unfortunatedly, as you will see, MoNumber is a quantitative variable (attribute), so the boxplot option is not available. Drag the MoNumber again to the horizontal axis, but this time, just before you release the mouse button, hold the Shift key down. This forces Fathom to interpret MoNumber as a categorical variable (attribute) and the boxplot option becomes available. This gives a beautiful side-by-side boxplot analysis of the Draft_No on a monthly basis.
       
    
    
  • Fathom 2 offers an advanced feature called "Category Sets" that allows the user to state an "order" for the values of a qualitative or categorical variable.
    1. Create another side-by-side boxplot of the Draft_No versus the Month. To do this, drag a new graph object to the Fathom window. Drag the Draft_no onto the vertical axis, then the Month onto the horizontal axis. Select Boxplot from the drop down list.
    2. Double-click the center of the collection icon to open its inspector. Click and select the "Categories" tab, then create a category set named "monthOrder" as shown in the following figure.
       

       Enter the months in the Categories in the order shown in the figure above.

    3. We've created the category set, but we need to apply it to the Month attribute. In the collection Inspector, click and select the Cases tab, then click and select the Month attribute as shown in the following figure.
       

       Click the "Show details" button, then select "monthOrder" from the "Set" drop down list, as shown in the figure above. Click "Hide details" and close the inspector. Note the affect on the order of the categories in your side-by-side boxplot.

  • Write a short essay (typed --- no more than two pages) in Microsoft Word on the "fairness" of the draft lottery. Use "cut and paste" to place your scatterplot into your Word document. Be sure to comment whether the "randomness" in the scatterplot shows that the draft lottery was "fair." Use "cut and paste" to place your side-by-side boxplot with "ordered" categories into your Word document. Go onto the internet and research the 1970 Draft lottery. Try to find out what happened. Be sure that your analysis includes an interpretation of your side-by-side boxplot.

  • In Interactive Statistics, pages 376-384, do exercises #7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 15, 17, 19, 21, 25, 26, and 28.
  • In Interactive Statistics, page 383, do Exercise #34 in Fathom.
    • To save time entering the data, download this Fathom file, exer6_34.ftm from the website, then open it in Fathom. With the collection highlighted, drag a Case Table to the Fathom window.
    • Use a Summary Table to find the sample mean and standard deviation of the temperature data.
    • Make a histogram of the temperature data. Drag a text box to the Fathom window and use it to describe the distribution in the histogram.
    • Drag a second graph object from the toolbar to the Fathom window. Make a dotplot of the Temperature data. Right click the Graph object and select plot value from the popup menu. Use this to plot the mean. After this, plot values mean()+stdDev() and mean()-stdDev(). Count the number of data within one standard deviation of the mean and record this in a textbox. Perform similar tasks, adding plot values for mean()-3*stdDev(), mean()-2*stdDev(), mean()+2*stdDev(), and mean()+3*stdDev(), then counting data within two and three standard deviations of the mean.
    • Use a textbox to answer parts (d) and (e) of this question in your text.
    • Drag a third graph object to the Fathom window. Drag the temperature data to the horizontal axis, then select a Normal Quantile plot from the drop down list of graph types in your Graph window. The rule is this: The closer the data in a Normal Quantile plot are to lying on a line, the more "normal" is your data.
    • Arrange objects on the page, Print Preview to be sure all will print, then obtain a printout.

  • Complete the activity The Normal Distribution in Fathom. At the end of the activity, there are questions on three distributions: normal, uniform, and discrete. You are to complete the question on the normal distribution, obtain a printout of your result, and hand that in.

    • 7.60. Include a "stick graph" of the distribution with each of your solutions for parts (a), (b), and (c), Then complte parts (d), (e), and (f). For part (d) include an estimate of the expectation of "balance point" of your stick graph and compare it to the exact computation of the expectation.

  • Exam #2 will be distributed in class, Monday, October 16. It will be due at the start of class, Wednesday, October 18. You are allowed to work on the exam at home. If you know you are going to miss class on the 16th, you can download a copy of the exam. Download Exam #2. No late exams will be accepted.

    1. For part (a) of this question, use Fathom to construct a histogram, modified box plot, and normal quantile plot. Obtain printouts of these results. Do these graphs indicate whether a normal model egg length is plausible?
    2. Use Fathom's "Estimate" object to determine a 95% confidence interval for the mean length of the cuckoo eggs.
    3. Calculate the confidence interval by hand. State the formula, substitute the appropriate numbers (you can grab the sample mean and standard deviation from Fathom and grab t^* from page 668 in your text), then use you calculator to find a decimal approximation for your result. Compare to the confidence interval provided by Fathom.
    4. Answer parts (c) and (d).
  • Page 648, Use your calculator to determine the confidence interval for the given data in exercise 10.21, then answer the remaining parts.
  • Page 648-649, use Fathom to find the "point estimates" and confidence intervals requested in parts (a)-(d). Obtain a printout of the result. Don't bother with question (e).
  • Pages 649-650, do exercises 10.23, 10.28, and 10.29.
  • Pages 650-651, perform each of the following tasks for exercise 10.30.
    1. Use Fathom to compute the 95% confidence interval requested in part (a). Then use your calculator to compute the same confidence interval and compare to the Fathom result.
    2. Answer parts (b)-(d). You might want to use Text Boxes in Fathom to answer these questions.
    3. For part (e), create the modified box plot using Fathom, then answer the question posed in the exercise.

    1. Using hand calculations and a calculator, find the mean and median SUGAR content for each shelf. Show your work.
    2. Download the data set exer5_8.dat.
    3. Drag the data set to an open Fathom window and a collection will be formed. Highlight the collection and drag a CaseTable to the Fathom Window. You can inspect the data in this CaseTable to see if it matches the data in Exercise 5.8 in the text (it does).
    4. Create a new graph and drag SUGAR to the horizontal axis. Drag SHELF to the vertical axis, but hold the shift key down while dropping this attribute to force this system to interpret the attribute as categorical instead of quantitative. Select Histogram for your plot type. This should create three histograms, one for each shelf.
    5. Right-click the graph and select Plot Value. Enter mean(SUGAR,SHELF=1), as shown in the following image.
    6. Continue as in part (5) and enter mean and median lines for each separate graph.
    7. Use a Summary Table to find mean and median SUGAR content by SHELF. Compare to your hand calculations.

  • Download the data set draftlottery1970.ftm.
  • Open the file in Fathom and perform the following tasks.
    1. Create a scatterplot of Draft_No versus Day_of_year. Does the draft seem random and fair based on your scatterplot?
    2. Create a side-by-side boxplot of the Draft_No versus the Month. To do this, drag the Draft_no onto the vertical axis, then the Month onto the horizontal axis. Select Boxplot from the drop down list. Drag categories with your mouse to put the months in their natural order.
    3. Let's look at another idea that places the months in a natural order. Create another graph in your Fathom window. Drag the Draft_no to the vertical axis, then drag the MoNumber to the horizontal axis. Unfortunatedly, as you will see, MoNumber is a quantitative variable (attribute), so the boxplot option is not available. Drag the MoNumber again to the horizontal axis, but this time, just before you release the mouse button, hold the Shift key down. This forces Fathom to interpret MoNumber as a categorical variable (attribute) and the boxplot option becomes available. This gives a beautiful side-by-side boxplot analysis of the Draft_No on a monthly basis.
       
    
    
  • Fathom 2 offers an advanced feature called "Category Sets" that allows the user to state an "order" for the values of a qualitative or categorical variable.
    1. Create another side-by-side boxplot of the Draft_No versus the Month. To do this, drag a new graph object to the Fathom window. Drag the Draft_no onto the vertical axis, then the Month onto the horizontal axis. Select Boxplot from the drop down list.
    2. Double-click the center of the collection icon to open its inspector. Click and select the "Categories" tab, then create a category set named "monthOrder" as shown in the following figure.
       

       Enter the months in the Categories in the order shown in the figure above.

    3. We've created the category set, but we need to apply it to the Month attribute. In the collection Inspector, click and select the Cases tab, then click and select the Month attribute as shown in the following figure.
       

       Click the "Show details" button, then select "monthOrder" from the "Set" drop down list, as shown in the figure above. Click "Hide details" and close the inspector. Note the affect on the order of the categories in your side-by-side boxplot.

  • Write a short essay (typed --- no more than two pages) in Microsoft Word on the "fairness" of the draft lottery. Use "cut and paste" to place your scatterplot into your Word document. Be sure to comment whether the "randomness" in the scatterplot shows that the draft lottery was "fair." Use "cut and paste" to place your side-by-side boxplot with "ordered" categories into your Word document. Go onto the internet and research the 1970 Draft lottery. Try to find out what happened. Be sure that your analysis includes an interpretation of your side-by-side boxplot.

    • Make a histogram of the temperature data. Drag a text box to the Fathom window and use it to describe the distribution in the histogram.
    • Drag a second graph object from the toolbar to thte Fathom window. Make a dotplot of the Temperature data. Right click the Graph object and select plot value from the popup menu. Use this to plot the mean. After this, plot values mean()+stdDev() and mean()-stdDev(). Count the number of data within one standard deviation of the mean and record this in a textbox. Perform similar tasks, adding plot values for mean()-3*stdDev(), mean()-2*stdDev(), mean()+2*stdDev(), and mean()+3*stdDev(), then counting data within two and three standard deviations of the mean.
    • Use a textbox to answer parts (d) and (e) of this question in your text.
    • Drag a third graph object to the Fathom window. Drag the temperature data to the horizontal axis, then select a Normal Quantile plot from the drop down list of graph types in your Graph window. The rule is this: The closer the data in a Normal Quantile plot are to lying on a line, the more "normal" is your data.

  • Download the data set exer10_14.dat. The best way to do this is to right-click on the hyperlink for the data set and select "Save Target As" from the menu. Save the file in your personal space on the server, not on the local machine.
  • In Fathom, select Import from file... from the File menu. In the "Files of Type" drop down list, select "All Files." You should browse to the directory where you downloaded the exercise data set, and select exer10_14.dat. Select Open. You should now see a new Collection icon in your screen.
  • With the Collection icon highlighted, drag a Case Table from the toolbar. You should now see the data for the exercise in the Case Table. Compare it with the data set given in exercise #10.14 in your text, page 588.
  • Drag a graph object from the Fathom toolbar into the Fathom window. Select the WASTE2 attribute from the Case Table and drag onto the horizontal axis of the graph object. Select Histogram for the graph type. Is the distribution of sample data somewhat normal?
  • Drag a New Hypothesis Test from the Toolbar into the Fathom window. From the drop down box in the upper right corner, select Test Mean. Do the following.
    1. From your Case Table, drag and drop the attribute WASTE2 into your Hypothesis Test Object near the top of the object. A rectangle will highlight when you are in the correct position.

    1. Create a scatterplot of Draft_No versus Day_of_year. Does the draft seem random and fair based on your scatterplot? Use the text tool to drag a textbox onto your Fathom screen and write your response in the textbox.
    2. Create a side-by-side boxplot of the Draft_No versus the Month. To do this, drag the Draft_no onto the vertical axis, then the Month onto the horizontal axis. Select Boxplot from the drop down list. Open a textbox on the Fathom screen and comment on any pattern you may detect in this use of side-by-side boxplots.

       One irritating fact about the side-by-side boxplots in the this question is the fact that the months are not ordered on the horizonatal axis. In your textbox be sure to comment on why categorical data cannot be ordered.

    3. Create another graph in your Fathom window. Drag the Draft_no to the vertical axis, then drag the MoNumber to the horizontal axis. Unfortunatedly, as you will see, MoNumber is a quantitative variable (attribute), so the boxplot option is not available. Drag the MoNumber again to the horizontal axis, but this time, just before you release the mouse button, hold the Shift key down. This forces Fathom to interpret MoNumber as a categorical variable (attribute) and the boxplot option becomes available. This gives a beautiful side-by-side boxplot analysis of the Draft_No on a monthly basis.

       Open another textbox and comment on any pattern your see. Before printing, do a Print Preview to make sure all your plots and textboxes appear on the screen.

    4. Go on the internet and research the 1970 Draft lottery. Write a short essay (typed --- no more than a page) on the "fairness" of the draft lottery. Try to find out what happened. Be sure to include an analysis of your side-by-side boxplots in your essay.

    2. Create a side-by-side boxplot of the Draft_No versus the Month. To do this, drag the Draft_no onto the vertical axis, then the Month onto the horizontal axis. Select Boxplot from the drop down list. Open a textbox on the Fathom screen and comment on any pattern you may detect in this use of side-by-side boxplots.

       One irritating fact about the side-by-side boxplots in the this question is the fact that the months are not ordered on the horizonatal axis. In your textbox be sure to comment on why categorical data cannot be ordered.

    3. Create another graph in your Fathom window. Drag the Draft_no to the vertical axis, then drag the MoNumber to the horizontal axis. Unfortunatedly, as you will see, MoNumber is a quantitative variable (attribute), so the boxplot option is not available. Drag the MoNumber again to the horizontal axis, but this time, just before you release the mouse button, hold the Shift key down. This forces Fathom to interpret MoNumber as a categorical variable (attribute) and the boxplot option becomes available. This gives a beautiful side-by-side boxplot analysis of the Draft_No on a monthly basis.

       Open another textbox and comment on any pattern your see. Before printing, do a Print Preview to make sure all your plots and textboxes appear on the screen.

    4. Go on the internet and research the 1970 Draft lottery. Write a short essay (typed --- no more than a page) on the "fairness" of the draft lottery. Try to find out what happened. Be sure to include an analysis of your side-by-side boxplots in your essay.
