Subject: Math 30 "Hybrid" (E4282) -- Message to Students

Hello there!

I am sending this email to all students registered in Math-30-E4282 for fall semester.

Here is some information you really should know about the course before we begin.

This section of Math 30 is a "Hybrid" course that meets twice a week (6-7:20pm on MW) -- it is part in-class and part online. It requires a lot of work on your own.
Classes begin on Monday, August 24.
We will meet in PS 117 on the Eureka Campus.

Reduced in-class time is ideal for students who work or live live far from school, or who, for other reasons, have a need to reduce their trips to the CR campus. The class meets twice a week, and all students ARE expected to attend all class meetings -- this is NOT purely an online class.

Because our scheduled time in-class is reduced, you have to study and learn a lot ON YOUR OWN (some students call this a “teach-yourself” course). Also, for this course, you will have to spend LOTS of time on the computer, doing homework online. I *highly* recommend that students block out 15-20 hours per week to devote to this class.

All the exams are given online. Exams must be taken OUTSIDE of our scheduled class time, in the presence of an exam proctor. So you will need to spend about an hour taking exams, roughly once every week or week-and-a-half or so. (At the Eureka campus, tests are given in the ASC in the LRC.)

So you must make regular use of a computer with internet access to do your homework, and you also must be on campus for our class meetings, PLUS to take exams at other times.

If this does not sound like it will suit you, then you might want to register in a traditional classroom Math 30 instead.

(If you are interested in switching to a different section, and need help with that, let me know.)

Please think about this carefully, because this is a very tough course, so you want to do as much as you can (that is in your control) to make this experience go as smoothly as possible.

Additionally, if you are NOT planning to continue on to take Calculus, then you might like to consider a completely different Math course instead, such as Math 15 or Math 5, depending on your needs.

MATERIALS:

(1) If you decide to take Math 30, then you will need a textbook. We will use Algebra & Trigonometry, by Michael Sullivan. You can get the 6th or 7th edition for about $10 or even less. (You can find them online -- I don't think the CR bookstore is carrying these older editions any more.)

Here are the webpages for the books -- This is so you can see exactly what they look like and get ISBN numbers:
  • 6th ed: http://www.pearsonhighered.com/educator/academic/product/0,,0130914657,00%2ben-USS_01DBC.html
  • 7th ed: http://www.pearsonhighered.com/educator/academic/product/0,,0131430734,00%2ben-USS_01DBC.html

The CR Math Dept has a limited number of copies of the text that you can rent for the whole semester (I think it's $10 or $5 rental fee -- you can call the office 476-4211 to check on that).

If you would like to get the 8th, you may use that, but it is more expensive, weighs more, takes up more room, and is not significantly different in content (not much at all really). (But it might be easier to acquire Solutions Manuals for the 8th ed.)

NOTE: You should be aware that Not All Math 30 teachers allow use of the 6th edition.

    (2) In addition to the textbook, you will need to get a Bound Notebook with grid paper (such as something like this.

-- Make sure it has GRID (or GRAPH) paper in it -- NOTE: CR bookstore usually sells these for about $2, and Staples occasionally has these on sale for $1 or so.

    (3) You will also need a Graphing Calculator (such as TI-83 or TI-84) -- NOTE: There are some graphing calculators available for rent from the Math Dept ($20 per semester).

NOTE: You might like to see "Student Information and Help Resources" on this Math Dept web page: http://msenux.redwoods.edu/mathdept/courses/math30.php

Also, again ... if you are NOT planning to continue on to take Calculus, then you might like to consider a completely different Math course instead, such as Math 15 or Math 5, depending on your needs.

Let me know if you have any other questions.
