I have a Bachelor of Science in Forestry and Natural Resources from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and a Master's Degree in Forestry from West Virginia University. My research interests include small-scale forest management and cross-boundary conservation- simply put reaching across fence-lines to achieve conservation goals like enhancing wildlife habitat or improving water quality. I've worked for several forestry companies and help manage my family's forest.

My teaching techniques include place-based experiential learning. We are out in the campus redwood forest applying what students learn in the classroom, so they are prepared for entry level forestry and natural resources careers. Student coursework includes solutions focused problem-based learning, scenarios and group projects that help students learn both science and communications skills. Students have lecture in the classroom and just a 10-minute hike leads us into the college's redwood forest. Most days forestry is fun, gratifying hard work. On the days it's not so fun, at least you are out in beautiful places!

All you need is appreciation for the outdoors and trees, and interest in creative problem solving that help us find solutions to some of our pressing problems like climate change, catastrophic wildfires, forest health, protecting clean water, clean air and enhancing wildlife habitat. A career in forestry and natural resources helps you make a difference with hands on skills gained in our courses. If you like hiking in the forest or riding an ATV and want to bring your dog to work a career in forestry is a great choice. There are also a lot of career options like GIS/Mapping, UAV drones and research.

My favorite part of teaching is helping students make connections in our community and securing full-time or seasonal jobs. When they get that first summer job working in the field or are successful transferring to Cal Poly Humboldt- I am proud!
